This is an entry-level position that reads and records water meter readings, in addition to testing, repairing and replacing meters as required.
On-the-job training is available and the position provides opportunities for advancement.
This incumbent often walks long distances in all types of weather.
Primary duties include:
Reading, inspecting, testing, cleaning, calibrating, repairing and replacing water meters in a designated route.
Provide direct utility account service to customers, including turning service on and off as requested, assisting customers track the source of high consumption issues and pressure problems, and providing self-help information and recommendations for resolving problems.
Perform all tasks necessary for delinquency control, including turning water off, disabling meters and restoring service after payment.
Minimum
Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent is required.
Must be proficient in working with various hand tools; knowledge of the geographical area covered by the Topeka water distribution system is preferred.
Three months' direct or related experience and/or training in water connections, meters, fixtures and valves preferred.
Basic knowledge of computerized meter reading equipment and/or experience with various desktop software is beneficial.
Must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka's insurance carrier and possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
Additional certifications as required.
