Assistant Director of Bands (Recruitment No. 18-000040)

Washburn University invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Bands to begin August 1, 2019.  This is a 9-month, non-tenure track appointment as Lecturer.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in music.
  • Experience directing university athletic bands.
  • Conducting experience at the collegiate level.
  • Experience teaching at the collegiate level.
  • Demonstrated expertise in teaching applied percussion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate or ABD in music.
  • Experience writing drill design for marching band.
  • Public school teaching experience (2 years).
  • Experience in an additional area such as applied low brass.
  • Experience directing a drumline.


  • Serve as the Assistant Director of the WU Marching Blues.
  • Direct the university’s men’s and women’s basketball bands.
  • Assist with the Kansas Bandmaster’s Association & Capital City Marching Festivals.
  • Maintain an active level of professional activity in the recruitment of high school students.
  • Teach music courses assigned to fit the successful applicant’s qualifications.
  • Expected to contribute to the life of the department and university through service.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
